Poll: Which portable to go with

surface-pro-black-keyboardI am pondering a purchase in the future to replace my soon to be 3 year old 15″ Macbook Pro. I have generally narrowed my options down to another Macbook or a Windows 8 touch enabled device. I like MacOS, but I am going to dock my current workhorse at my desk at home and still have my iMac at work, so I am not walking away from those workflows. On the other hand, I am happily tied to various proprietary Windows applications, especially geospatial, which I often have to wait and work on when I am at home or run at reduced speed virtually.

All of that said, here are the 5 finalists.

  • Macbook Pro 13″ – Dualbootable, compact size
  • Macbook Pro 15″ – screen real estate and dedicated graphics chip
  • Microsoft Surface Pro – tablets are just handy
  • Lenovo Yoga 13 – foldable and a touchscreen in one
  • Dell XPS 12 – interesting flippy screen

    1. I know that you’d narrowed it down to 5 choices, but don’t overlook the Toshiba Portege. So lightweight & portable when compared to other ultrabooks and tablets I’ve seen.

      1. My issue with most of the Windows 8 convertibles/ultrabooks is the resolution. Most have a 720p equivalent resolution, where as the Yoga 13 has a 1600×900 res and the Surface has 1080P (the downside is that the 1080p is shoved into 10.6″).

My first tablet was a Portege back around 2004 and it had a higher res than the modern Portege even with a smaller 12″ screen.
