What are your thoughts on starting a GIS Program

This week’s podcast topic is a quick discussion of some of our thoughts on starting a GIS Program. We were specifically talking about academic institutions without any geospatial technology classes, let alone a Geography major, but is an issue for anyone who is doing geospatial training. Since we only have a few minutes to talk about the question in the podcast, we only started talking about the topic. On that note we were wondering what your thoughts on not only figuring out what to teach students, but how to get buy-in from institutions and make connections with others in the field to increase student understanding and knowledge.

The GeoTech center might be a good resource: http://www.geotechcenter.org/Home.aspx

URISA is considering a partnership with them to help provide professional development opportunities to GIS educators in community colleges. I think it will be a good collaboration as two year colleges have historically been under served by geospatial professional societies.

That is definitely a great place to start. For those who aren’t familiar with the GeoTech Center you should check out some of our interviews from their planning period a couple of years ago. Click on the Categories drop down and choose NGTC under the podcasts group.
