In the Dev Summit Plenary

The first half of the Plenary Session focused on ESRI’s plans for the product line and for their development products. The timeline they put up showed SP2 in the next month, SP3 over the summer and 9.3 around the end of the year and there was even a little bit of discussion regarding 10.X. The first half was finished off by a discussion of ArcGIS Desktop. Click on more to see an abbreviated outline of the plenary.

Jim McKinney is giving an overview of the morning and conference overall. Highlights include

  • New functionality in Service Packs including 9.2.2 later this month
  • Jack came up to thank Jim and introduce Scott

    Scott Morehouse is up on the stage to talk about the product development strategy.

  • He started with a general overview of GIS and its role and framework
  • Discussed the different roles of Server uses (geodata, IMS, geoenabling SOA)
  • Looking to the future
  • extending server
  • modernizing interface
  • overhauling core components (Geodatabase, geoprocessing)
  • standardizing mobile app framework
  • enhance ArcGIS Online
  • 9.3 available ‘later this year’ improve and expand on 9.2 (AJAX Web API, Expanded OGC support, PostGRE support, etc…
  • Beyond 9.3 (64-bit, multithreaded, new graphics engine, open file GDB API, 3D info models, searchable metadata [smart folder like], etc…)
  • Time for Euan Cameron who is going to talk about Desktop (he rides motorcycles and climbs mountains)

  • Desktop, Engine, and Server
  • Good talk about ArcObjects, but not bulletable…sorry
  • Larry Young is giving a quick VB extension example…brave man coding in front of a crowd
  • David is giving a Java app example
  • And after a quick wrap-up by Jim, that was it for the first half of the plenary.
