BBC NEWS | Google opens up 200 years of news

Google has now turned into a time machine. With the addition of their Archive Search on News you have access to a couple of centuries of digitized articles. To continue the trend of adding something spatial to a not necessarily spatial news item, I searched for cartography and looked at pre-1950s results. The first one, though only a snip-it of the article, was from 1941, The Washington Post, titled Raid Proof Cartography Plant Set. Now-a-days departments have to fight to find a cartographer to teach…1941, let’s build not a cartography studio, no, a cartography plant. Not a happy reason to build one, but still kind of cool. Not just in the 1940’s, I actually visited the USGS printing facility not even 10 years ago (closed now). I apologize for the randomness, I have a cold. That’s right, a loaner laptop and a cold, but we are still recording tomorrow 🙂
