We want to know where you began your interest in Geography or geospatial technologies. Did you start off in some other field and happen upon the importance of being ‘spatial’, or did you know where you were all along? Head over to the front page of VerySpatial and let us know your roots.

Orienteering, of all things. Orienteering is that sport where you run through a forest with a map and compass, trying to get from checkpoint to checkpoint as quickly as possible. I built up an ever growing collection of orienteering maps, then helped draw some, then took a side trip into the math of map projections, then my pre-existing interest in the history of science caught fire and I got interested in the history of mapping and geodesy. Then I started doing some Google Maps mashups, then I found your podcast and website, and here I am.
My degree was Natural Resource Planning and my first job out of college was as a land use planner for a county. About 3 months into a bunch of HP boxes showed up and my boss said “do you know what GIS is?” I said sure… I had a class in GIS and an internship where I used GIS.
It’s now 13 years later and after some oscillation between planning and GIS I am now 100% GIS for a city government. That being said, I do work with the planners quite a bit!
I was wasted when I took my Physical Geography final my freshman year in college and aced it. I was up ’til 6am in my fraternity house drinking w/ my buddies before we “planned” to go home on the Saturday our Physical Geography final was. Of course, on a Friday in North Dakota you can forget about a Saturday morning final fast when drinking during a blizzard. Still, my friends bombed it and miraculously I got everything correct. Funny how those communications majors always change majors after the first semester, eh?
My professional focus is in creating real time rendering engines for games / virtual worlds; and now I’m the principal architect of a new GIS enabled / social network application that will emerge in a few months. Neat stuff, I ‘ve learned a good deal about the GIS world this year and it has been a rewarding experience. I’ll certainly keep this area in mind from here on out.
