Elevation maps

ask.elevationAlthough has really gotten a lot of press or attention, they do have one interesting feature, that recent posts at The Map Room and AllPoints Blog referred to: elevation maps. Although nobody who posted on it had much to say, other than to make a note of it and descibe the new layer’s features, it does represent another aspect of GIS data that is being put out there.

You access the relief imagery by clicking on the “Physical” button, and you can see the relief for the area you’re looking at. The data is from NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center, and other sources. It’s cool to see, but is only available for coarser resolutions, and you can’t query the actual values, but it will be interesting to see if they do any more than just offer the data as a background image.
