Interesting show on maps as art. I think though, that you were blinkered by the art and athestetics aspect of cartography. Good cartography is athestetic. Good cartographic product does not require fancy embellishment. What GIS people need to concentrate on is using the basic cartographic conventions to ensure that the ideas they are trying to convey with their product are clear to their target audience. If you learn the ‘rules’ of good cartographic design, and apply them to all your mappng projects, then even your interim mapping projects will not embarass you when they go walk-about.

I am also willing to come out and defend the design of Google Local. Novice GIS users can learn a LOT about generalisation and proper label placement from the base mapping in Google Local. The athestetic of the colour choices is also very good. As a cartographer what worries me is the extent to which the process used to create the map has been patented by google. I don’t fear automation of the well understood elements of cartographic design in a rules based approach. I do feel uncomfortable with the notion that someone can own those processes. But that is another show…
